When Romance Meets Destiny (Gwangshiki dongsaeng gwangtae / 광식이 동생 광태 -2005)

When Romance Meets Destiny
Starring:
Tae-gyu Bong - Yu Gwang-tae
Kyeong-ho Jeong - Kim Il-wung
Ah-jung Kim - Lee Kyung-jae
Ju-hyuk Kim - Yu Gwang-shik
Yo-won Lee - Ko Yun-kyung
Cheol-min Park

Roughly divided into three equal parts, film kicks off with the decade-long inability of mild-mannered photographer Gwang-shik (Kim Ju-hyeok) to express his love for high-school sweetheart Yun-gyeong (Lee Yo-weon). When Yun-gyeong is ready to make her affections plain, Gwang-shik's drunken brother, Gwang-tae (Bong Tae-gyu), accidentally foils their romantic progress. Second chapter discloses Gwang-tae has little problem bedding babes, but his pursuit of sexy and intellectual marathon runner Gyeong-jae (Kim Ah-jung) reveals he's emotionally stunted. Final section blends the two strands. Helming is inventive and astute, though the script lags slightly as meller elements gain ascendancy. Performances all ring true, and tech package is up to the usual Korean high standard. -- Variety

This movie started out with a bang and ended with a "WTH?" I'm so dissappointed with this movie. I watched this in the hopes of some sweet romance and comedy. Oh yeah, it had that in abundance but I didn't quite like the feeling of being betrayed at the end.

Viewers in movies go in hopes of trading their lives for hope, peace, and enjoyment while spent in a theater lost in the new world of cinema. Okay, so I wasn't in a theater but in my living room lounged on my sofa while my kids run amok and my mother lies on the other sofa reading a book. But I'm still lost in the world of cinema via my high-speed internet computer.

So I'm laying there, anticipation abound. I enjoyed the first half of the movie and my hopes are leaping and my heart is pounding waiting for Gwang-shik to finally confess his love. We are almost there....almost....almost....he's at the alter....arm outstretched....palm is up....reaching....reaching......he grabs the microphone??????? WTF!??!

I won't give away the rest of the end of the movie but lets just say that both brothers got screwed in the end and so did the viewers. Romance my ass!!!!

Why can't the Korean romance/drama writers give us a happy ending? Is that tooooo much to ask for? I'd say that 1 out of every 20 movies, Korean movies, have happy endings. Why do I even watch? It's like the lottery....you hope you get the winning ticket........................

Chang Hu (Yim Chang Jung) finds himself on the verge of poverty, as he struggles to make ends meet, while keeping his financial difficulties a secret from his dutiful, cheery wife Seon Ae (Seo Yung Hi). Chang Hu is being hassled by Seong Won (Kim Su Ro), an embittered ex-basketball player-turned-debt collector, who is surprised to learn that he's got a six-year-old daughter (the adorable Kim Yu Jeong), who just so happens to be suffering from a life-threatening medical condition. While in the hospital, she's often visited by her "boyfriend", a young boy who turns out to be the son of a sassy divorcee named Yu Jeong (Uhm Jung Hwa, from Singles). While appearing on a television show, the ballsy doctor finds herself butting heads with Detective Nah (Hwang Jung Min, from You Are My Sunshine), a tough-talking, Rambo-loving cop whose experience with the ladies is practically nil. Of course, the bickering twosome soon find they may like each other more than they think.

But that's only half the cast. Yu Jeong's ex-husband is shown to be an uptight music industry big shot named Jo (Chun Ho Jin), who has to confront his gay past head-on when he hires a male housekeeper (Kim Tae Hyun). The film's other two stories include one about nun-in-training Su Gyeong (Yoon Jin Seo) who falls for a fading pop star named Jeong Hun (Jung Kyung Ho), and another tale about an elderly theater owner (Ju Hyun) who takes a shine to the vivacious, but aging actress (Oh Mi Hi), who runs a coffee shop located on his property.

As the film proceeds, the narrative strands begin to cross as the events of each story begin to have consequences for the other characters, all of whom are, in their own way, trying to find happiness in an increasingly uncertain world. Loneliness, unemployment, strained family relations, and impending death are just a few of the not-so-pleasant themes that resonate through many of the tales spun in All For Love.

The premise of this movie was like no other Korean drama/comedy movie. At first, they had several stories that were a collage of scenes and left your brain trying to figure out what goes where, and who belonged to who. But as the movie went about it's business, all the scenes started to mix together and make more sense as you started to relate to what was going on.

I loved how they figured out how to make all the couples and relationships come together. My favorite couple were Su Gyeong (nun to be) and Jeong Hun (pop star). I wasn't too happy how they had this relationship end but the others ended on a better yet happier note.

If you can get past the mosaic of relationships at the beginning, you'll really like this movie. It does take awhile to catch on but the stories come together and you find yourself routing for all or one of the couples. Really nice and sophisticated type movie. Totally wonderful way of putting a movie together. Real cool!

Gangster High (Pongryeok-sseokeul-2006)

Photobucket
Starring:
Jeong Kyeong-ho~Sung-ho
Lee Tae-seong~Jae-gu
Lee Haeng-seok~Chang-bae
Jang Hie-jin~Sue-heui
Jo Jin-woong~Hong-gyu
Yeon Je-wook~Jong-seok

Sang-ho and his friends Jae-gu and Chang-bae create a boys soccer club called “Tigers”. Sang-ho, whose main passions are hitting the books and kicking a soccer ball, meets Su-hee through Jae-gu. Su-hee is polar opposite from Sang-ho. While he is the model student and athlete, Su-hee is a tough but pretty problem student. Their differences inevitably draw them together. But Su-hee belongs to Jong-suk, the leader of a teen gang calling themselves “T&T”. The Tigers soon find themselves engulfed in a battle with T&T. When Sang-ho’s friends become seriously injured during a fight with T&T, Sang-ho makes a choice he can’t go back on.

OMG! Another freakin' good movie. (Told ya Gangster High was on my must watch list.) Wow!

It starts off kind of slow but I think they were setting up the characters for us. Once the action starts, it is non-stop! Wow! A totally incredible cast. Jeong Kyeong-ho, again, amazed me with his diversity. He was still the "good boy" in this but when push-came-to-shove, his transformation was amazing.

Forewarning with kids, this is an "R"-rated movie. Some serious blood runneth over in this movie especially near the end. I have to admit I had to turn my head a few times. Ugh!

This was a psychological drama. Sung-ho tried desperately to avoid confrontation. When do you walk away? When do you finally give up and fight? Do we always have to turn the other cheek? Sometimes we have to fight especially when we are needed but how far should we go? All this should be determined in this movie......

By far a serious thought provoker that definitely should be discussed with your pre-teens and teenagers. Sometimes we are drawn into fights when we are seriously unwilling.

Top-notch, class-A variety movie. Must see TV!!!

Herb (허브, Heo-beu-2007)

Herb
Starring:
Gang Hye Jung - Sang Eun
Bae Jong Ok - Eun's mother
Jung Kyung Ho - Jeong Bom

At first look, Sang Eun is a beautiful and healthy 20-year-old woman, but in reality she has the intelligence of a seven-year-old child. Lovingly cared for by her mother, the simple and sweet Sang Eun sees the world in fairy tale colours.

One day, a Prince Charming comes into her life in the form of policeman Jeong Bom.

Through budding romance and unexpected tragedy, Sang Eun learns to face the world on her own two feet.

How is it that I'm finding all these wonderful movies? I've only found a few duds and most of the crap I have watched I watched prior to starting this blog and have no desire to find them and post how crappy they were. So for now, you'll just have to deal with what I'm watching now. Hehe!

This movie was so touching. You couldn't help but melt towards Sang Eun. Gang Hye Jung mastered that character to perfection. I loved her portrayal immensely. You couldn't help but laugh when she bit into someone who thought she was stupid.

Then there was the realization that Jeong Bom had that he really liked Sang Eun. The different faces of transition from admiration, to disgust, to love that he had to go through just tore my heart up. Then having to deal with the fact that he had to let her go. *tears* That was tough. I don't cry baby movies especially just after watching a funny one isn't in my forte. But I have to say, this was an ingenious movie created to leave you thinking about the handicapped, the slow, the dying. Don't miss this movie. I want you to leave this movie thinking about how you can better the life of the disabled.

Okay, this guy is good. I love the innocence of his face. But...and that is a big BUT...I noticed he is in a lot of tough guy movies and dramas. I can't wait to see him in them. Time Between Dog and Wolf (with Lee Jun Ki-cutest guy ever!) and Gangster High are now on my list to watch. Woo-hoo!!
